A bit farther south, but still doable in a day trip, is Xcaret Eco Theme Park, the Mayan Ruins of Tulum with its Tulum beach, Gran Cenote, Coba, and Chichen Itza, Xenotes Oasis Maya in the jungle, and the islands of Cozumel, Isla Contoy, and Isla Mujeres. The resort features 274 luxurious suites and private villas, some with private pools and outdoor soaking tubs, and almost all with an ocean view. There is also an Italian-Med restaurant, Terra Nostra, with some yummy wood-fired pizza, a Peruvian restaurant, and one that is located at the adults-only pool that serves steak and fish specialties. And of course there’s Mexican food, their restaurant Ramona, offers upscale Mexican dishes while you enjoy ocean views. On a recent trip to Mexico, Peter and I had the pleasure of staying at one of the best resorts in Cancun: NIZUC Resort & Spa. When planning our vacation, we looked for a location and a resort that would allow for some pampering, some water activities, and allow us to indulge in some great meals. We were not disappointed, and can confidently say that this is one of the best hotel resorts in Cancun. This is the type of place that allows you to escape your everyday life and enter a world that travel dreams are made of.

Given its location in the Yucatan bordering the Caribbean, water-based activities reign supreme. You can jet ski, water ski, kayak, snorkel, SCUBA dive, or go fishing. You can also do boat tours, swim with dolphins, paraglide, or visit a sea turtle sanctuary. Our suite was more than spacious, with over 700 square feet indoors, and featured floor-to-ceiling glass doors that led to a patio overlooking the clear blue Caribbean. Well appointed, with a sitting area, state-of-the-art entertainment center with flat-screen TV, and a minibar featuring a Nespresso machine for our morning jolt of caffeine. I made good use of the freestanding soaking tub in the large bathroom (as well as the L’Occitane bath products!).We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Café de la Playa.

Things to Do in Cancun Hotel Zone

We found the NIZUC Resort & Spa to be one of the best resorts in Cancun. Beautiful accommodations, perfect location, an incredibly friendly and courteous staff (even exchanging money for you the front desk), private beach, delicious food, and plenty to keep us busy (or not).We had plenty of time to explore, relax, and play while at the NIZUC Resort. We spent a good amount of time lounging by the large black mosaic pool (which had a swim-up bar) and at the white sand beach. Comfy chaise longues and an abundance of umbrellas made us hate to move. (The urge to do nothing on the beach is strong!) But we did spend some time at the gym and got some exercise in.As we checked in, the staff provided us with towels to freshen up, as well as slices of chilled melon and bottles of Fiji water. Then we were escorted, via golf cart, to our room.We also found out that we wouldn’t even need to leave the resort for food. NIZUC Resort has six restaurants on its property, each with a different cuisine, as well as several bars. There was no shortage of good food. You can expect nothing less from one of the best resorts in Cancun.NIZUC Resort is located just ten minutes from the Cancun airport—tucked away at the beginning of resort row—but it feels like it is worlds away. Entering the 29-acre gated compound, we felt instantly relaxed. Upon our arrival at the front door, we were greeted by not only the sound of peaceful water fountains but also an efficient staff that escorted us into the lobby. And this lobby was like none other I have seen, with floor-to-ceiling wooden doors that open up to a large serenity pond that overlooks the ocean. It was an instant “ahhhhhh” moment for us.
