Voyagers Might Be Set in Space but Lily-Rose Depp Had a Real Life Connection to Her Character

Ask Lily-Rose Depp about the bond she formed with her fellow Voyagers castmates and you’ll seriously feel a little left out.

The film, which has been touted as The Lord of the Flies but make it space, features a whole cast of young and talented actors including Depp, Fionn Whitehead and Tye Sheridan.

“I think there’s a lot of comfort to be found in each other and in the bonds that we all formed,” Depp told POPSUGAR Australia during a press junket for her new film. “I think that’s what you always hope but we really lucked out in the sense that we really got along and formed real friendships.”

During the filming of the sci-fi flick, Depp said that the young cast was able to “lean on each other, unwind together and have a lot of fun” but don’t worry it was pre-COVID, so it was all safe to do so.

Depp plays Sela in the film, which follows a crew of teenage astronauts on a multi-generational mission which descends into paranoia and madness, not knowing what is real or not.

Her character is complex and and acts as a sort of leader of the group, while also navigating her own growing sexual awakening and experience.

“Sela is a really fascinating character. We meet her at a very critical point in her life where she’s pondering a lot of questions about what her purpose is and what kind of life is going to be available to her on this ship,” she said.

“They’re all the questions that anybody can be brought to think about, which is especially poignant right now with the year we’ve had and how much we’ve had to sit with our thoughts and maybe ask ourselves some of those questions.”

Whitehead plays Zac, a rebellious teen who convinces the others to stop taking “the blue”, a substance that controls their sexual urges in an attempt to stop over breeding on the ship. For the 23-year-old actor, it a groundbreaking concept.

“It’s something that I’ve never done before,” he told POPSUGAR Australia. “And something I’ve never seen written before. That’s what drew me to the script, the idea that all of these suppressed feelings and chemicals in your body kind of come flooding back in all at once and with a vengeance and it was the sort of escalation of things, especially for Zac, the mania of it all, like they’ve been given the freedom for the first time and they just don’t know what to do with it.”

Watch Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead and Tye Sheridan in Voyagers at HOYTS in Xtremescreen where bigger is better. In cinemas from April 8. Book your tickets now.
