How to Wear a Jumpsuit

I’m a fan of jumpsuits but I know I’m not alone when wondering at times how to wear a jumpsuit. How to accessorize a jumpsuit, how to wear different styles of jumpsuits, how to wear a jumpsuit for different occasions, and figuring out what shoes to wear with a jumpsuit.

I’ve always liked how fancy jumpsuits come across and how just one piece can make a complete outfit. They make it easy to dress nice and look stylish! As a dress, it’s one and done. I even love wearing jumpsuits while traveling! My summer travel outfits are made up of bright casual jumpsuits. They are a cinch to style and easy to pack!

But jumpsuits can be a little intimidating and if not worn correctly can look sloppy or make you look shorter or wider than you are. There’s a reason you mainly see black and white jumpsuits. They are easier to wear, and you don’t run the worry of looking like a trendy fool in a crazily printed jumpsuit. With a black or white jumpsuit, you’ll look usually always look stylish and chic.

Personally, like with most of my clothing, I opt for the more classic and elegant pieces. I do love the color, print, and different jumpsuit textures but with my petite frame I have to be careful or pieces can swallow me whole.

Let’s review how to wear a jumpsuit and the points you should keep in mind next time you’re putting together a jumpsuit outfit.

5 Style Tips to Put Together Chic Jumpsuit Outfits

1. Find the Perfect Fit

Purchasing a jumpsuit that fits your body perfectly is key to looking polished and put together. Don’t wear a jumpsuit that is too tight or too loose.

If you wear a jumpsuit that’s too tight, you might give off that Catwoman vibe, and you might feel uncomfortable. If you wear a jumpsuit that is too loose, you will completely lose your figure, and the jumpsuit will overwhelm your body.

The elegant white jumpsuit I’m wearing in this outfit has a halter style top half, a cinched waist, with a wide leg. It’s not too big or too small, and I’m able to show off my figure by showing the right amount of skin with the halter top and having the accentuated waist.

Nordstrom always has a lot of stylish jumpsuits to shop from. So that is the first place I would recommend you start your search for your perfect jumpsuit.

2. Define Your Waist

I have to emphasize the point of not losing your figure. A lot of jumpsuits have either a cloth belt the same color as the jumpsuit or you can easily add your belt to define your waist. Cinching your jumpsuit at the waist is a great way to add some femininity to the look and give you that curvy look.

In this white jumpsuit, I double wrapped the white cloth belt to define my waist. I could have also added a gold or black belt to add some dimension, but I wanted to show that you don’t need to look much stylish in a jumpsuit.

You can see in the shopping section below, that most of the jumpsuits I saved have a matching cloth belt.

3. Pair the Jumpsuit With a Blazer

I like to add dimensions to my outfits! Even though the white jumpsuit could stand alone, I wanted to show you how you can easily add a blazer to give it some personality.

If you’ve never worn a jumpsuit before adding a blazer will make you feel more comfortable than without. It breaks up the look and adds a layer to make the jumpsuit more subtle.

When selecting a blazer or jacket go with one that enhances the jumpsuit and goes with the occasion. This outfit could work for a cocktail party, formal evening dinner or going out to fancy drinks with friends. Consider where you are going to wear your jumpsuit and select a blazer that either brings it up a notch or makes it more casual.

I wanted to create an elegant look with this white jumpsuit, so I selected a black tuxedo like a blazer with split personalities. It’s a tuxedo blazer in the front but looks like a cape from behind.

Pick color tones that are similar to your jumpsuit or contrasting. Like, in this case, I went with a black and white jumpsuit outfit. If you’re wearing a pretty floral jumpsuit you might want to wear a light rose blazer. Just make sure the two items match.

4. Wear Heels with Wide Leg Jumpsuit

If you’re wondering what shoes to wear with a jumpsuit, always opt for heels! Unless it’s a very casual jumpsuit for the beach. Wearing heels is a style rule I follow because you don’t want to appear short or frumpy. Create the illusion of long and lean by not having the bottom of the jumpsuit bunch up. If I were to wear this wide-leg jumpsuit with sandals or flats, the bottom half would look pretty sloppy. It would look like I’m wearing a jumpsuit that doesn’t fit, and I would look shorter.

The shoes you wear with wide-leg jumpsuits need to be on the skinny side. Stay away from wedges, clogs, or anything with a thick heel. This is especially true if the fabric is light and airy, like in the white jumpsuit I’m wearing.

5. Wear a Solid Color Jumpsuit

If you’re a jumpsuit virgin ease into it and wear a solid black, navy, forest, or dark-colored jumpsuit. If you’re a little daring, opt for a jumpsuit with a small print, like polka dots, or bright color!

In these summer travel outfits, I wore a polka dot jumpsuit, a bright pink jumpsuit, and a bright yellow polka dot jumpsuit. Those are some jumpsuit outfit examples on the other end of the spectrum, casual and fun for summer.

But Black is always a slimming choice!

A solid jumpsuit is elongating since it’s one unbroken vertical line the eye moves easily up and down without interruption.

Once you feel comfortable in a black or white jumpsuit experiment by adding some pattern or splashes of color.

Jumpsuits Can Be Worn to Formal Occasions

A jumpsuit can easily be dressed up for a formal event. If the style of the jumpsuit is appropriate, then all you have to do is accessorize it to fit the party. Think of a black or white formal jumpsuit.

The jumpsuit I’m wearing in this outfit is a feminine and elegant white jumpsuit with a pleated halter. Since it’s more classy in style, I easily dressed it up with heels, a black tuxedo blazer, gold accessories, and a dainty handbag. I also wore my hair is a fancy bun to go with the style of the outfit. You could also opt to wear a braided updo! I love fancy braid hairstyles because they look fancy, your hair stays in place, and it’s a little extra that levels up your entire look. I can easily wear this to a formal event and fit the dress code.

Here is another fun fact! I wore a white jumpsuit for my civil ceremony in San Francisco! I said I do in a beautiful and elegant white jumpsuit! For my civil ceremony, I paired the white jumpsuit with navy Badgley Mischka heels (the same ones I wore my Dream Wedding in Paris) a sparkly belt, sparkly earrings, and an infinity Tiffany necklace. This is an example that you can wear a jumpsuit for a civil wedding and look very stylish.

Jumpsuit Shopping Tips

When shopping for a jumpsuit there are a few things to keep in mind. A pant jumpsuit is incredibly chic, comfortable, and easy to wear.

Get the right length. You don’t want to be tripping over yourself or ruin the jumpsuit. Buy a length that is appropriate with heels or flats. If you’re going to wear a jumpsuit mainly with heels make sure to wear heels when going shopping so you know the length is perfect or that you’ll get it hemmed. This pre-purchase test makes it easier to know how the jumpsuit outfit will come together instead of waiting until you get home and the same thing goes for pairing the jumpsuit with flats.

If this is your first jumpsuit purchase one in a solid color. Here I went with the super safe black because I want to be able to wear it over and over and all year around. Also, a solid color lengthens your body and is oh so flattering. If you absolutely have to wear a pattern go for something subtle.

If you’re going to invest in only one jumpsuit make sure it works for every season. The jumpsuit I’m wearing in this post is sleeveless and has a V neckline so it’s ideal year-round. I can wear it like this during the spring and summer than simply throw on a colored moto jacket when it gets chilly.

Go formal! If you don’t think you will get much use out of your jumpsuit on the casual weekends in the park then get something that can be dressed up. Select a formal color and a silhouette that looks stylish with some statement accessories.

The last point I need to mention is, make sure it fits! Not too short or too long, not too tight or too loose. The perfect jumpsuit needs to be flattering and you need to feel fabulous every time you put it on!
