Stylish Sweater Dresses

Share via:When wearing a sweater dress, you don’t want to look like you’re wearing a potato sack so accentuate your waist with a belt. In this outfit, I wore a black leather belt and wrapped the end of the belt around the loop to keep it in place. This grey sweater dress (more like a tunic) is from Banana Republic. I layered a darker gray turtleneck sweater from LOFT under it for more coverage. Layering a turtleneck under it makes it look like a grey turtleneck sweater dress which is the look I was going for. It was also a little cold so adding this layer made this outfit more appropriate for the winter.

5 Points to a Stylish Sweater Dress Outfit

Add Layers

I like this sweater dress because it’s a long sleeve, it’s slightly oversized, and it has an excellent natural pattern to it.If you bought a sweater dress that you don’t quite know how to wear in the winter, try adding some layers. Either add a layer under it, like I did in this outfit or add a long cardigan over it. To keep your neck warm you could add a scarf but just make sure not to overwhelm your figure with fabric.

Color Coordinate

To create a stylish sweater dress outfit from this long sleeve sweater dress, I took into account various little details. Remember the details are what make a good outfit, great!

Wear Appropriate Shoes

Remember the shorter the hemline of a dress or skirt the lower the heel of the shoe. The reason I can get away with wearing a slightly shorter long sleeve sweater dress in the winter is because of the over the knee flat boots.Do you wear sweater dresses? If so, what do you usually wear with a sweater dress?

Add a Belt

I love a good sweater dress. I usually like how they look on other people more so than myself. I’ve only shared with you a sweater dress outfit once before on my blog, so that goes to show that I don’t have many.Sweater dresses can sometimes be on two extremes, extremely oversized and very unflattering or form fitting and overly short. Always try on a sweater dress before purchasing it and make sure you have items in your closet that you can pair with it. Sweater dresses are a very tricky item to wear.

Consider the Sweater Dress

Stay Stylish,
-VThe boots are high enough to cover a large portion of my legs but still leaving a bit of my skin exposed. I want to point out that the boots are flat and suede. The dark rich color and fabric bring an elegant look to this sweater dress outfit instead of let’s say, black heeled leather boots.I’ll share with you the points I kept in mind, and you can apply the style tips that apply to your sweater dress outfits.Even though this outfit is made up of neutrals, I made sure the colors coordinated. Even when wearing all neutrals this is an important point not to overlook. I matched the dark grey turtleneck sweater to the grey hat. I wore a skinny black belt to match the handbag and boots. The main thing to remember at this point is to make sure that the belt matches the outfit. I went with a structured belt because I needed it to add “structure” to the outfit. I wouldn’t wear a sash or cotton belt in this case because the sweater could easily overwhelm the belt. You want the belt to stand out in this case.
