The Getaway: How to Spend a Girls’ Weekend In San Diego, California

Whether you’re driving down to San Diego from Los Angeles, or it’s the final stop on your tour of the PCH, there’s one minor detail that you should know upfront: there will be traffic and lots of it. Equip yourself with the leading technology, a gas-saving hybrid engine, and most importantly, a car that you don’t mind sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic in, then the experience can be quite pleasant.

I was the proud borrower of a 2021 Lexus LC 500h for the weekend, and I took full advantage of all it had to offer. From the generous navigation screen to the leather and suede seats to the curve-hugging suspension, it would have been exciting to drive anywhere. But in SoCal, where expensive cars are the love language, it added to the whole experience. Did I make a pit-stop at In-N-Out after three hours inching down the 101? Yep. And did I watch four different car-loving men circle the vehicle in the parking lot, simultaneously giving their nod of approval? You bet. Aside from the incredible handling, my favorite feature had to be—I’m about to get very nerdy—the hybrid engine. I drove from Los Angeles to San Diego and back, sitting in eight hours of traffic total, on a measly quarter-tank of gas. When fuel prices in Beverly Hills top near $6 per gallon, that felt like a giant win.
