The Sacai x Nike LDV Waffle was named “Sneaker of The Year” in 2019 by Complex, and for good reason too. There’s a high chance you’ve seen this Frankenstein silhouette online if not in real life, since it was unveiled in Paris in January 2019. When it finally dropped in March of that year, it sold out at breakneck speed, inevitably landing on resale platforms for around nine times the original retail price.
This silhouette is a literal mashup of Nike running sneakers from the 1970s, the LDV and the Waffle Racer. In true Sacai fashion, the shoe has a hybrid construction which has become a calling card of Sacai designer Chitose Abe. Here, it manifests in double tongues, duplicated Swoosh details, two sets of laces, and a stacked sole. Although its popularity saw the Sacai x Nike LDV Waffle release in an array of vintage-inspired and monochromatic colorways, it’s the original blue, red, and yellow iteration that remains most coveted.
